Parents and Carers

Supporting Your Child’s Learning and Development
At our school, we recognise that parents and carers play a vital role in every child’s education. When school and home work together, children are more likely to thrive, feel confident, and achieve their full potential. This page is designed to share practical ideas, resources, and strategies that will help you support your child both academically and emotionally. From establishing positive routines and encouraging a love of reading, to talking about their day and celebrating their achievements, there are many ways you can make a real difference.

If at any time you have questions, concerns, or would like further advice, we encourage you to get in touch with the school so that we can work together to support your child. By maintaining open communication and a strong partnership, we can ensure your child feels supported, motivated, and ready to embrace the opportunities ahead.

Ways You Can Support Your Child

  • Encourage daily reading – share books together, discuss stories, and explore different types of texts. Please sign your child's reading diary each week.

  • Establish positive routines – set regular times for homework, bedtime, and screen use.

  • Talk about their day – ask open questions, listen carefully, and celebrate their successes. A great question at the end of a school day is 'what is the best thing that happened today?' This encourages children to notice the positive aspects of their day and this builds a great habit for life.

  • Support homework and learning tasks – provide a quiet space, encourage independence, and check completed work.

  • Promote healthy habits – ensure a balanced diet, regular exercise, and enough sleep.

  • Foster independence and resilience – let your child make choices, solve problems, and take responsibility for age-appropriate tasks. Praise them for managing set backs. At school we promote a growth mindset by understanding that mistakes are an important part of the learning process and that challenging work is a way to help your brain to make important connections.

  • Value effort as well as achievement – praise perseverance and resilience, not just results.

  • Encourage participation in clubs and activities – support them to try new things and discover interests.

  • Model positive attitudes to learning – show curiosity, problem-solving, and a growth mindset in your own life.

  • Stay in touch with school – read newsletters, attend events, and contact us promptly with questions or concerns.

Useful information for new parents & carers:

Absences

All absences must be reported to the school.

Please telephone the school before 9.30am or report absences through School Spider.

Holidays can not be authorised unless there are exceptional circumstances.

Parents Evenings

Learning Reviews are important ways to keep in touch with your child's attainment and progress. These are 10 minutes per child each November and March.

Parent Teacher Association

The PTA is a fantastic way to get involved with the school and make new friends. If you'd like to get involved, please email us at ravenbankpta@gmail.com

Family Support

We all need a helping hand sometimes. There are a number of support services available to families and these can be provided at any time in a child or young person's life. Please see our Parent Support page.

Volunteering

If you'd like to become a parent helper, please get in touch. Parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles are all welcome. Please see the volunteer helper leaflet and our Code of Conduct at the bottom of this page.

School Meals and Snacks

All children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are currently entitled to a free school meal. When your child is in Year 3 and above, these have to be paid for through ParentPay.

Snacks are also available for an additional cost. If you send in snacks, please ensure that these are nut-free and healthy (no crisps or chocolate).

Parent Views

We regularly seek the views of parents and carers. Each summer term there is a parent survey and this information is used as a discussion point in our termly Parent Forum meeting. You can also submit your views about the school to Ofsted by following the link: http://parentview.ofsted.gov.uk. Ofsted always sends a survey to all parents and carers before an inspection begins.

Parent Information Talks

Each term, Mrs Sach does an information talk, sharing the school development plan in the autumn term and in the spring and summer terms, an update against our targets. There is a face to face event during the school day and a video will be posted on this page each term for those who can't attend.

There are also opportunities to come into school and find out more about different topics. Recent ones have included My Happy Mind and an online safety session.
